How To Go For Windows 8.1 Upgrade

How To Go For Windows 8.1 Upgrade

Feb 16, 2014

Apparently Windows 8 was not all what people expected, but with the release of 8.1 users can look forward to a better experience and a much friendlier user interface. This version is available through the conventional physical discs offered in retail stores and electronically via downloads from Microsoft’s official website. All users using genuine later versions such as 8 can now upgrade to the new 8.1 free of charge with these simple easy to follow steps.

To reduce the risk of getting disconnected while the download is in process, it is recommended that you use a wired Ethernet connection as opposed to Wi-Fi. Also connect your laptop to mains power to avoid any power interruptions. A power interruption could lead to a corrupted operating system.

Steps For Windows 8.1 Upgrade

Preparing your System – Prior to the upgrade, there are a number of things that you need to do. First, ensure the system has all the latest updates. If the system updates automatically, you will still need a manual update for the latest updates.

Backup – All important files and folders such as videos, pictures, and documents should be backed up in an external drive, DVDs or network location. If you have an automatic backup service, then you will not need to back up again.

How to download and install Windows 8.1

After preparing your current system, the next step involves downloading and installing the new version. Click on the Windows key to open the start screen and then hit the tile store. Next, select the ‘update to windows 8.1 for free’. It is an easy one to find as it is the first in the store. There will be a brief preview explaining the new features available in the new system. Click on the install button.

You will need to wait for the download of the new version and the installation. The amount of time that the download will take will highly depend on your internet connection and partly on how busy the servers at Microsoft are. The download is quite large as the 8.1 Pro edition is 3.5 GB. The good thing is that you can still use your old edition as the system downloads the 8.1.

Once the download is done, the computer will need to restart. You can save anything you are working on as you will only be able to work on your computer once the 8.1 is fully installed. There are will be different screens indicating the progress of the process and the computer will restart several times. You will have to agree to the terms and conditions for the upgrade to continue. There will be a few more screens showing the progress and in a while you will have the new version installed. After the upgrade is complete, it is recommended that you run updates immediately.
